Re: Day of the Octopus OOC
Last night's "bad night" has turned into a fullblown meltdown/crisis today. I really don't want to drop out of this game, but it's going to be awhile before I'm going to be capable of keeping up with the game reliably-- I know we're already down a player, but is it possible to grant me a hiatus and write me back in when my brain is firing on a few more cylinders?

Re: Day of the Octopus OOC
Oh, I'm really sorry to hear that. Yes, I think we can do that. I hope everything works out for you.
Plaids, Kareeah_Indaga, how are the two of you allocating your dice?
For Sleeper, it could be 12/D8 or 10/D10.
For Hercules, it could be 14/D8/D8/D6 or 12/D10/D8/D6 or 6/D10/D10/D8. And I also need to know how you're distributing the effect dice between the three targets.A System-Independent Creative Community:

Re: Day of the Octopus OOC
A hiatus is fine, take as much time as you need. Please send me a direct message since I think the e-mail notifications for posts on subscribed threads seem to be slowing down.
As for dice allocation I will go 14/D8/D8/D6 with a D8 for Mysterio, D8 for Shocker, and D6 for Rhino.Last edited by Plaids; 2024-04-25 at 11:35 PM.

Re: Day of the Octopus OOC
Ok. That's a D6 or a D8 if you can stunt it off of one of your power sets. If Electro had rolled a 1 on one of his dice (he didn't), a stunt would get you a D10.
Is this something we can do too, or is it specific to Watcher characters? How does it work?
But I could have said, "Mysterio creates a D10 Illusionary Rhino asset" and then had Rhino use it.A System-Independent Creative Community:

Re: Day of the Octopus OOC
Actually on reflection it’s not going to make a difference, so never mind. I’d need to somehow roll a nine on the d8 to beat Electro’s roll, and that means Sleeper is out of the fight. 💀
Sorry Plaids! Herc is going to have to win this one on his own!
Thank you for clarifying!

Re: Day of the Octopus OOC
Did Sleeper really have D12 physical stress already? I thought he was quite a bit lower than that.
If you do wish to avoid the damage, as an alternative to spending a plot point to add a D6 or D8 to your dice pool (which I think is normally supposed to happen before you roll the dice), you can spend a plot point to add a third die to your total, and you can do this after you see the result. So in this case, you could spend a point to add the 9, 7, and 6 together, and that would be more than enough to beat Electro's 17.
Another option would be to spend a plot point to turn the D8 physical stress you are taking into D8 mental or emotional stress instead. I don't know why you would do that instead of adding an extra die to your total and avoiding it all together, but it is a way that you can spend plot points.A System-Independent Creative Community:

Re: Day of the Octopus OOC
I think Hercules resisted Rhino's charge. I think I will try to subdue shocker since he seems to be able to cause more collateral damage than mysterio and lacks the toughness of Rhino.

Re: Day of the Octopus OOC
He has a d6 Physical from the trap blowing up in his face at the bank. Electro is hitting with a d8, so even if I reduce it with a d10 effect die on the resist that would be a d6, so d6 + d6 = 💀 unless I’m misunderstanding the rules.
Oh cool. I will do that then!
22/d10 Effect die in that case,
D6 Physical damage
D8 Emotional damage
1 Plot Point remaining after adding the extra die to the resist roll.
I agree that would be a weird thing to do in this particular instance, but I will keep that in mind for the future!

Re: Day of the Octopus OOC
Yup, looks like it. And sounds like a plan.
If you have a type of stress and you take more of that type, then:
If the new stress is higher than the old one, you just have the new one. For example, if you had D6 physical stress and you take D10, you now have D10.
If the new stress is lower or equal, then the old one steps up. So if you had D10 physical stress and you take D6, you now have D12.
Different types of stress don't interact. So if you had D8 emotional stress and you take D6 mental stress, you now have D8 emotional and D6 mental.A System-Independent Creative Community:

Re: Day of the Octopus OOC
Thank you for the explanation! So in this instance, if Electro had hit Sleeper would have been up to a D8 of Physical regardless? Either the D8 replaces the D6 outright, or the resist effect die reduces the attack effect to a D6, which then steps up the existing D6 to a D8 - am I understanding correctly?

Re: Day of the Octopus OOC
Plaids, since this looks like our last round before the building collapses, anything particular you want to try to accomplish? I’m trying to narrow down my options.
Also questions for the Watcher:
- I’m assuming trying to lower the Doom Pool is kind of pointless at this point (and may be a bad idea from an action economy standpoint anyway given that we’re outnumbered two to one) however this seems like a good opportunity to ask how does it work?
- Can Assets/Complications persist past the scene they’re made (Kaine’s Got the Drop seemed to but that might have counted as part of this one)?
- You said the villains escape if the building collapses, does that count any we might KO?

Re: Day of the Octopus OOC
I didn't realize how close the doom pool was to getting so high and about to end the encounter. I think the best thing to do is to secure something before retreating or the building site collapses. Some obvious evidence of the villains' plans are not lying around so maybe we could subdue and capture one of them to interrogate them later.

Re: Day of the Octopus OOC
In general, in this game, rolls are made to step up dice or step down dice. Inflicting stress, creating or increasing a complication, or creating or increasing an asset are stepping up dice. Recovering stress, removing a complication or asset, or reducing the doom pool are stepping down dice. So you would need a total that beats a total rolled by the doom pool, and then you would dedicate the effect die (or multiple effect dice if you had them) against specific doom dice. If your die was higher, you would remove the doom die altogether; if your die was lower, you would step back the doom die.
Can Assets/Complications persist past the scene they’re made (Kaine’s Got the Drop seemed to but that might have counted as part of this one)?
You said the villains escape if the building collapses, does that count any we might KO?
Also, I wanted to say that I'm noticing you guys aren't hitting your milestones very often. Are you forgetting about them, am I not giving you enough opportunities, or are they not matching with how you're feeling your characters?A System-Independent Creative Community:

Re: Day of the Octopus OOC
Okay so what I’m understanding is, it’s basically impossible for Sleeper to keep the building up at this point since he’d need to reduce or remove all three d10s.
(I don’t know if it would have been a good idea anyway and it’s narratively appropriate for us not to stop the bad guys this early in the adventure, I just want to make sure I’m not overlooking anything.)
If it helps here are some of the things I’m considering:
Try to reduce doom pool- off the table because it requires more luck than I have for limited benefit even if it works- Make an asset: tracer chemical to track down the villains later, after we’ve regrouped/reorganized etc. This is the one I was asking for. OoC I wouldn’t expect this to lead us directly to them, given we’re dealing with at least one super genius and we’d have to go retrieve Kaine,* but might be useable to locate clues or otherwise slow down their plans - locate the underworld contacts they’re using to obtain parts for the robot, a supply stash, etc.
- Make an asset: Adrenaline boost for Herc, since his offensive dice are better that Sleeper’s and he has an area attack, to hopefully take out more than one supervillain giving us better chances of grabbing someone to question
- Try to take out Shocker, Electro, Mysterio, or Rhino
*I know he’s out for now, and you know he’s out for now, but Sleeper does not, so dice permitting there will be at least a short detour after the building collapses while Sleeper goes to find out what happened to him, and if necessary drag him back to Night Nurse for treatment of his injuries/to be webbed to the ceiling until the latest bout of crazy wears off.
Well if it comes up Sleeper will also attempt to drag away any KO’d supervillains, both for the tactical reasons (questioning them and hopefully sending them back to jail) and because DD will be upset if we let the building crush any of them to death. But since they’re working together so closely I’ll assume their fellow villains have first dibs.
Haven’t forgotten, Sleeper’s been initiating most of the fights which makes it kind of hard to barge into someone else’s. 😅 And I might have screwed myself from an XP standpoint by discounting the other PCs as hosts, since missions with them don’t count for it.
Once this fight is over (and assuming I’m remembering the rules correctly) I was going to spend an XP to bring in Daredevil since we’re down two PCs now and need the backup anyway, and it would be narratively appropriate to send Sleeper swinging around townfishing for Milestone opportunitieslooking for information/allies.

Re: Day of the Octopus OOC
I think Hercules resisted attacks from Rhino and Shocker. I think it would be best to try and buy some time to subdue one enemy or steal some evidence before retreating somewhere. Hercules is well suited for holding the structure together.
As for not pushing for milestones, I'm more used to a combat heavy dnd level up systems or just being given levels as the plot advances. The closest equivalents to the Marvel Heroic Roleplaying system I have seen are Mutants and Masterminds system where players can have their PC give into a character flaw for temporary resources and Kult where players try complete Dramatic Hooks to have their pc ascend to higher levels of existence. It is novel to be rewarded for just having your pc be the character you defined before the game started. I will try to advance the milestones and maybe revise them if allowed to.Playing as Hercules in Marvel Cortex Game
