Re: Girl Genius XXXII: The scientific method at work!
Think I need to vote for "Plotting, ranting, and menacing the countryside".
Times being what they are, the stars aligning and the End of All Things barely registered as background noise.
At a bit of a loss as to what to do next, and with bills to pay, a certain Elder Thing has taken up bartending.
This is...

It's been mathmatically proven that approval voting is objectively superior to plurality. Check this out.

Re: Girl Genius XXXII: The scientific method at work!
Clearly, rather than democratic "mob rule" we should be ruled by the technocratic elite! A.K.A., Sparks! Look how well that works out in Europa!
I wonder what's going to happen when the Dreen see this creature. Is it possible that this one is a lot bigger than they expect? Are they going to "Nope!" their way out of the battle once they've seen it?
Also, why do the Dreen need the lantern at all? This ... is my signature finishing move!

Re: Girl Genius XXXII: The scientific method at work!
Tallied.
Thanks for the link - that was interesting.
We had one "office expert" at work who hated First Past The Post, and had come up with some marvelous and complicated system of voting, and was throughly deflated when I pointed out to him that it had to be easy enough to implement and simple enough for everyone to understand. That last bit is a very difficult bar to clear.Warning: This posting may contain wit, wisdom, pathos, irony, satire, sarcasm and puns. And traces of nut.

Re: Girl Genius XXXII: The scientific method at work!
A very simple fix to most problems in first-past-post is the French presidential election model:
If anyone gets >50% of the vote, they're the president.
If that doesn't happen, there's a second round, but the only candidates are those who came in first and second in the previous round.
(But that's academic, we're voting for a thread title, not for who has the nuclear launch codes...)Post, post, post, post an amusing and insightful comment!

Probably. The castle, big or small, is really keen on the Heterodyne being respected in general and also on suitors proving their worth.
Statues all over the place ranging from the merely tall to the gigantic of the Heterodyne, erected by a suitor with a obsessive fixation on the Heterodyne? Now, that's showing some proper respect; Wulfenbach might even be in competition with the Skull-Queen of Skral for best-suitor-ever.

Re: Girl Genius XXXII: The scientific method at work!
Noted.
Low. I'm more inclined to think that they'll sort out Mechanicsberg, play the "now that's sorted we can try and find Higgs", have some long adventure where they get hints of a revolt happening in Skifander, and ends with them turning up on the Skifander doorstep to see Higgs sitting on a pile of Priestess skulls amd saying "what kept you?". Cue happy three happy (hopefully) reunions and the reveal (or not) of Gil and Zeetha's relationship. (Klaus knows, I think Zeetha has figured it out, but I don't think Gil has twigged yet)Warning: This posting may contain wit, wisdom, pathos, irony, satire, sarcasm and puns. And traces of nut.

Re: Girl Genius XXXII: The scientific method at work!
I think her expressions when she was talking to Gil (while he recovered at Mamma Gikka's) were telling rather clearly that she did figure it out. Especially when she later learned that Klaus has shown Gil special techniques to stay away for many days straight. After all, she knows that Klaus talks fluent Skifandrian and I am quite sure there are not all that many outsiders that got to know it.

Re: Girl Genius XXXII: The scientific method at work!
Pretty sure we will get Mechanicsburg sorted out and that will let us move on toward retrieving Higgs.
Not at all sure that Higgs will have had to fight anyone. A different plot twist might be that he's found a new romantic partner, possibly to avoid having to fight. What if Higgs is now consort to Zeetha's mother? That could be awkward. This ... is my signature finishing move!

Re: Girl Genius XXXII: The scientific method at work!
It's very easy to underestimate Zeetha - she's a warrior princess, and while she isn't as smart as the sparks, she's far from stupid, and a lot more in touch with her feelings. Zeetha's revelation (here and following) - and Zeetha's treatment of Gil makes perfect sense if you see it as teasing and supporting her newly found baby1 brother)
Klauses is more subtle than Zeetha's. Klaus first meets Zeetha here[/URL], and immediately offers an honourable surrender (scene expanded somewhat in the novel version). Bear in mind the lengths Klaus will go to to protect Gil - if he thought Zeetha was just a hunter/assassin she would be a corpse at the first oppotunity.

What? The offer was surrender and die. He didnt even have time to process the fact that zeetha was skifander as they were mid skifander language exchange when he got wasped.

Re: Girl Genius XXXII: The scientific method at work!
It's not nearly as close as you are suggesting. Let's see:
- Language exchange starts: https://www.girlgeniusonline.com/com...?date=20061129
- Language exchange interupted by wasp: https://www.girlgeniusonline.com/com...?date=20061201
- Lucrezia starts taking control: https://www.girlgeniusonline.com/com...?date=20061204
- Lucrezia taking part II: https://www.girlgeniusonline.com/com...?date=20061204
- Lucrezia loses control due to locket, Klaus tries to kill her: https://www.girlgeniusonline.com/com...?date=20061208
- Lars steps in, Klaus gives "kill them all" order because he is dealing with the Other and it may be the only chance he gets before she takes over: https://www.girlgeniusonline.com/com...?date=20061211
- Fight scene: https://www.girlgeniusonline.com/com...?date=20061213
- Lars' death scene; Zeetha engages Klaus: https://www.girlgeniusonline.com/com...?date=20061215
- Tableau: https://www.girlgeniusonline.com/com...?date=20061216
- While fighting Zeetha, Klaus realises something (last panel): https://www.girlgeniusonline.com/com...?date=20061218
- Ni Tok (surrender): https://www.girlgeniusonline.com/com...?date=20061220
It's true that Klaus doesn't have much time to process things, which is why it happens in the middle of the fight.
However it would make no sense whatsoever for Klaus to suddenly give a surrender offer to a random Skifandran under the circumstances. Even later he is concerned that Zeetha is out to kill Gil, and we know he has zero patience or mercy for anyone who tries to do that. It's obviously not because she's a Skifandran, because he was prepared to fight her. The logical reason is that he suddenly suspects that is daughter has been sent after him or Gil (or both), and he doesn't want to kill her.
(There may be other details - we don't know much about Skifander yet, and we know even less about what Klaus knows)Last edited by Manga Shoggoth; 2024-05-11 at 02:04 PM.

Would you believe I somehow missed the fact that he had a tiny little pen knife at her throat in that panel till now? I think I was more focused on agatha having her mad boy freak out over lars.

Oh, that's the first time I noticed it as well. I also noticed that her headband was mirroring her expression. We know it does that from later comics (when Higgs has the headband), but that's the earliest I recall seeing it drawn.
