I honestly don't get the reference in the latest comic. What big hair? The only type of hair I'm aware of that's associated with evil characters is a goatee, and even that hasn't often been found in Dark Side users.

Probably Kylo Ren's hair, as he's the current villain to compare to?

TBF we never really saw Padme's jaw while she was Darth Vader.

    From memnarch's commentary:

The image of the hand on the rock looks really odd. It's going to be CGI of course, but something about it makes me think it was in slow motion too. Probably the lighting?
That seems easy enough to answer IMO: the floating rocks are too crisp, there's no motion blur on them. While it's technically possible to capture fast-moving objects without motion blur if you're using a fast enough shutter speed, that leads to psychologically confusing visual language, especially in video, so it's not done.

To make a broader point, when in Star Wars has a floating rock EVER moved very quickly? I can't think of any time off hand.

Not gonna lie, I had been looking forward to Memnarch finding out that they were also headed to a casino in the actual movie and that this wasn't a Comic Irregular invention, despite sounding suspiciously like it was.

    Spoiler: Fandom reaction
    Show
Also, wow, Memnarch don't recall anyone disliking episode VIII? They really managed to avoid all of Star Wars's fandom since the beginning of the ST.

Me too, I've been delighted by the commentary on that topic. At least they've progressed past the denial and bargaining phases and arrived at anger at the casino subplot.

And as for the fandom reaction thing, yeah, it seems they did an AMAZING job of staying out of the loop. Ep. IX is certainly a lot worse IMO since it pretty much threw all pretense of quality out the window, but VIII was EXTREMELY polarizing. It was almost impossible to not see someone raging over it somewhere. By the time IX rolled around it was more annoyed resignation than anything, IMO.

Also it’s an island in the middle of the ocean. It’s gonna rain sometimes.

And it was filmed on location off the west coast of Ireland. With the same result, unless they want to spend a lot of money waiting for a dry day.

Like that's why Porgs exist. They were shooting on the Skelligs during Puffin Season, there's a lot of nesting seabirds and they're going to get into the background of your shots.

Fun thing though, rain itself still will not show up in your actual shots unless it's bucketing down. So you can get dreary cloudy skies and all your actors and scenery are soaked, but if you want raindrops to show up on screen you gotta do it yourself. (Or just cheat and add it in the sound effects.) Also means that if the clouds aren't too stormy you can throw a giant shelter over your actors and turn up the colour balance to pretend it's not raining.

The Angry GM's blog post about the Sky is awesome. Really tells me they know how it's done. Also, is this the first time in the series that they've been planetside and the weather has actually changed?

memnarch linked to a couple of examples of "hallways of nothing". I get that they're not visibly functional, but can't look at those shots and think of those walls as just partitions. Something about the specific geometrical texturing is reminiscent of computer casing, so I always figured the "walls" were full of whatever technology they were using to magically propel the ship/maintain living conditions. Just me?

I seem to remember reading something about how, in some Akira Kurosawa movies, they actually painted water black before raining it down (with a hose or something, I suppose) so that it would show up on film. Then again, it was on black-and-white film, so that likely changes things.

Or you're using projectors to backlight the rain so the drops shine enough to be caught by the camera, which is the trick used in old movies like Singing in the Rain. (No, contrarily to the urban legend, they weren't using milk.)

I asked as typically rain is used to set the mood for specific scenes. Didn't expect a technical converstion

I haven't watched anything after The Force Awakens, and while I have read recaps I have only a vague idea of what happens later on. But at the moment I'm treating this more like a Steven Moffatt set-piece-to-set-piece show than anything else. Sure, the Darths & Droids authors are providing plot connections that kind of make sense. But I'm happy to pretend they're working from a show that doesn't have any coherent plot, and that they just have to go with what's on screen, because some shows are just like that. Including a bunch of action and heist flicks and their parodies. This seems to be that kind of aesthetic.
