Re: OOTS #1154 - The Discussion Thread
I owe Peelee 5 Quatloos. But I am going double or nothing that Durkon will be casting 8th level spells at the big finale.
I bet Goblin_Priest 5 quatloos that Xykon does not know RC has the phylactery at this point in the tale (#1139).

Re: OOTS #1154 - The Discussion Thread
But then, how many status symbols in our society actually make economic sense? Go into communities that are really into watches, spirits, cars, etc. and you'll see plenty of folks talk about how "Brand X is what everyone knows, but this model by Brand Y is actually much higher quality," or "Brand Z actually costs a lot more and you have to be pretty well connected to even buy one." Sometimes culture just idiosyncratically decides that a certain kind of thing denotes wealth and power, even if objectively a different kind of thing requires more wealth to obtain or projects more power in practice.
In Star Wars, most people don't really recognize the sentience or individuality of droids. Even if your sentient organic slave is cheaper and much more useless than your team of battle droids, owning a person might project more of a sense of dominance than owning a highly advanced set of combat toasters.

Re: OOTS #1154 - The Discussion Thread
How does one become a slave, though? In some societies, citizens could become slaves as some form of sanction, for example, by not paying up one's debt.
And when you start including people as potential commodities that can be traded, well... that puts a value on people, and if there is good sales value, it can turn them into a form of currency. "How much for that pod racer?" "5000 quatloots" "I don't have that many, what about 2000 quatloos and 5 slaves" "Uhm, sure, sold!" I mean, Tatooine doesn't use republic credits. Maybe they there's a preference to trade with goods rather than currency.
That said, I don't think one should try to make sense of SW's economy.Attention LotR fans

One shouldn't try to make sense of D&D's economy either, and yet there's always someone who does.

That's right. Anything a movie directly presents is "in" the movie, such as actors, events, songs, or props. More overarching things such as plot or soundtrack can also be "to" or "of" the movie. Crewmembers who work offscreen, such as editors and equipment operators, are usually "of" the movie, as in "the director of the movie".

Word. Although one thing I have discovered is that, what with English being so widespread and so willing to steal, plunder & ransack any language that is within 100 Mm of it, you can pretty much put whatever preposition you want and some dialect, somewhere, will turn out to have used it that way. English: so broken, you technically cannot use it wrong.

Wrongly.
(Vague memories of my English teacher finger waving at us due to adverbs modifying a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Wrongly modifies use (verb) in that clause. Wrong, an adjective (which modifies a noun), might modify "word" in stating "I used the wrong word there." )Last edited by KorvinStarmast; 2019-02-11 at 10:42 AM.

Re: OOTS #1154 - The Discussion Thread
Can I sig this?
I've been thinking about going back to college to get a degree in Lit. Theory and have been reading up on Linguistics (Since it is where I'm weakest). I'm so over grammar right now. English is a terrible gothic amalgamation that I am simultaneously Surprised that people still speak it and completely understand that Native English speakers would insist on outsiders suffer with them.
Sometimes you just gotta give up the goat and admit that it's a terribly constructed language.
