Alternately, how likely is it that we could stage a night assault on the mining camp without being discovered on the approach or by watchers on the mesa? If that's an option, we could skip the escape passage idea and just go straight to "take the camp, arm the slaves, climb up the elevator shaft".
Yeah if you enter the mines directly you can get to the dwarf fortress without going through the escape tunnel. All of these are valid options!
