The shroud wails and melts into vapor with Connor's first strike. In retaliation, the injured shadow lunges for the young bard -- but before it can close, Aupti's flame strikes it. Fire kindles in the tangle of smoke that is its chest, and for a moment it blazes like one of the torches flanking the gate. Then the smoke drifts away.
The other spirits also move forward swiftly, pawing at Connor, but the attacks cannot penetrate his armor; frost forms on the leather, but he takes no harm.

Up on the wall, shrouds that cannot make it all the way through the wall begin bursting up from the parapet and attacking the militiamen. Most of them repel the attacks successfully, but you see at least one militaman fall, the shroud growing taller, stronger, darker as it absorbs his life force.
Beatrice blasts it dust and calls for an orderly to drag the body away. Priests are waiting in the towers to consecrate the body so it doesn't rise as another shroud.
