    Default Oslo-bomber sentenced.

Every other message board I'm on has had a thread about it, so I thought I'd put one up here.

Anders Breivik, the Oslo bomber was sentenced to the maximum penalty, 21 years to life in preventive detention. That is like prison except it is indefinite duration.

For perspective, it is about 3 times the sentence Charles Manson is currently serving, which would be written up as 7 years to life. Although manson gets parole hearings almost twice as often as Breivik will.

He'll be spending the time in what amounts to solitary, although this is not part of his punishment but because he probably won't survive contact with the other prisoners.

He won't be treated badly. He'll have access to the Internet (although he can't send, only receive), a comfortable bed, good food, and a private gym.

As much I appreciate the news (and i really do, believe me), I doubt every other message board you are on, has the same restriction this forum has about real world politics, yadda yadda…

I have no wish to diminish the grief of the families and the tragedy of the victims with trifles, but I have to say:

In the pantheon of Facial Hair of Evil (including Hitler's tootbrush moustache, the walrus moustaches of Stalin and Saddam Hussein, Charles Manson's wild-man beard etc.), Brevik's stupid little chinstrap beard has to be the most ridiculous of the lot.

I don't know, Hitler's moustache was identical to that of a persona of a famous Jewish film comedian, and may even have been based on said moustache.
That earns extra irony points to me.

Sorry, didn't realize this was considered political. Maybe it should be merged with the thread on his crime that is back here.

I think it's not that it is political as such, but that it very quickly becomes a discussion on the rights and wrongs of the Norwegian justice system.

Anyway, back off topic, personally I would put Colonel Gaddafi up there in the silly evil facial hair department. The style may not be bad in and of itself, but his age, and lack of ability to actually grow anything thicker than a 14 year old made it look stupid.

That, and I could see it straying into the touchy subject of multiculturalism, on which point I can but quote a Norwegian comedian who was playing the Edinburgh Fringe - "We're a nation of fat pink people with bad teeth. In what way would fresh genes be a bad thing?"

Oh yes, definitely. I guess no-one dared to tell him...

I have to say that Stalin's moustache isn't particularly silly, it's pretty much typical of a man from Central Europe. As for Hitler (look out! Godwin!), I believe Charlie Chaplin was quite annoyed about the toothbrush moustache and that, amongst more heinous crimes, was one of the reasons he made The Great Dictator. Recently comedian Richard Herring did a run of shows attempting to reclaim the toothbrush moustache for comedy, although arguably it already is comedy shorthand for an officious and ill-tempered type of character, e.g. traffic wardens and the like. once, whilst experimenting when shaving, I discovered to my dismay that I suited a toothebrush moustache

All very frivolous and off-topic, which IMO is pretty much the best way to treat someone like Brevik and not give his warped ideology the time of day.

Well, from what I understand, his mustache was originally rather bushy, but I believe he had to cut it down to that tooth-brush looking abomination to fit into a gas mask.

An interesting story, and it does sound somewhat plausible, though why he kept it that way after the war is another question.

Lets you keep some facial hair and keep your veteran cred at the same time, I would guess.
