Does the design of the dice that looks like cakes or as if they're covered with tiny pieces of rubber (the green one with blue edges, etc.) serve some sort of purpose or are they just odd?
Oh man, you got your Flipdice already? I'm still waiting...
I assume you mean the Drop Dot d20

well ... most dice do not have a specific purpose as they can be used for multiple tasks ... this is one of those
Someone on Reddit is claiming their friend said they had a d1000. Not a spinner, not a set of d10s for the hundreds, an actual ball (centihedron?) of numbers. Does/could/should such a monstrosity exist?

Given that we're talking about "a friend of a friend", and don't have the owner's actual quote, I suspect that he's talking about the d-1000 from this Kickstarter.
It's a d8, with little twirlers that let each side show one of 125 different numbers.

Y'know how some players sometimes get bored waiting for their turn and build little stacks with their dice? If you had a reeeeeaallly long wait for your turn, how tall would your dice stack be? Dice to the moon (and back)?
That's interesting enough to speculate on.
His website says, "120,679 dice". Assuming the average height of a die is roughly 1 inch, that's roughly 120 thousand inches, 10,000 feet, or 1.9 miles. That would also come to 3.1 kilometers.
The average height of a die isn't exactly 1 inch, but I would expect it to be on the close order. I'm pretty sure it's more than half an inch (unless his collection is mostly much smaller than average), and it's not likely to be more than 1 1/2 inches (unless his collection is mostly jumbo sized dice). So this answer is probably close, within +/- 50%.
Also, if it takes 1 second to put a die on the stack, then it would take roughly 120,000 seconds, or 2,000 minutes, or 33⅓ hours to build the stack.
---
[The moon is roughly 240,000 miles away. To reach that with 120,000 dice requires them to average just under 2 miles high.]
